Recently, I am experiencing a annoying problem of my thinkpad T61, on booting, there would be a message shown as bellow:
This hard disk initialization error would not appear everytime when you boot, but quite often, and not only T61 would have this problem, all other X serious too (X60, X61).
I found it seems this problem is very common, and it was experienced from early 2008.
Update hardisk fireware would solve the problem which is mentioned from that post and from lenove's note.

As Lenovo website says:
This firmware update includes the fix for the case on a system with Microsoft Windows Vista, that the system may become to display the following error message at each power on, and then cannot boot from the hard drive. "2100: Initialization error on HDD0 (Main hard disk drive)"
I hope this would really address the problem, beause so far I am still not sure will this error message appears again after next boot up :).
I've never been experiencing this Hard Disk Drive initialization error anymore after appy the patch. [October 28, 2009]

Hey guy, My X61 has the same
Hey guy,
My X61 has the same problem, but after downloading the iso from the site, my X61 has no CD/DVD Rom, must I use a usb Rom to update it, or are there some other good ways to update it?
Alternative
@Runger,
alternatively, you can find a USB CDROM for your X61 or go to thinkpad service center to ask them to upgarde your harddisk firmware.
you can also request service center to replace you a new brand new harddisk.
Hope this could help you to address it.
